Intended as a criticism of his contemporary European environment, More's Utopia describes what its narrating character Raphael Hythloday feels is the ideal society. More's commentary on the fictional society's radical (especially for the early Renaissance period) ideas such as a form of communistic living, married and female priests, euthanasia, etc. is ambiguous and has left the work open to debate and contentious analysis ever since.
